“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” – Dumbledore
Through Dumbledore and other characters JK Rowling said some wise words. This quote is an example of that. And in this column I will write down what I think the meaning of this is.
Happiness can be found even in the little things. A book, a comment from someone on the internet, an old teddy bear you would take with you in bed when you were a child, a smile from your mom, the wave of a stranger, that thankful smile from that old lady when you give her your seat on public transport. I could go on forever.
But if darkness finds its way into our lives, we easily miss those things. You focus your thoughts on the negative things that are happening around you instead of seeing those little lights. You will blame yourself for the existing of those negative things. Or you ask yourself: why? Why is this happening to me? Did I deserve this? Questions that are unanswerable. But instead of letting yourself drown in those dark shadows that linger about you, you should look for those little things that will make you happy.
When I have a bad day, or things go wrong in my life, I make myself a cup of hot thee, choose a book from my overfilled shelf and wrap myself in a blanket on my bed. One by one, the negative thoughts will disappear as I get absorbed into the story. A smile curling unknowingly around my lips when I come to a funny part. And that smile is the key to everything; it is that light you have to turn on in order to find happiness in your darkness. A genuine smile that will fight off those shadows, reducing the negative thoughts on the way.
Sometimes fighting against darkness will take more than just one genuine smile. But then you have to look for other little things that make you happy: a song, the sun setting, the stars shining brightly, the laugh of a little child when he runs away from his dad or sibling. And when you found such a thing you can fire another smile at those lingering shadows.
In some occasions you can have difficulties with finding that hidden happiness by yourself, but there will always be people out there who can help you find it. Strangers on the internet, members of your family, friends, your pet and if the times really get dark even a psychologist.
But the key, the light switch, always stays the same: keep smiling. Not the fake kind but the genuine kind.
And if you find yourself in a happy place, when you don’t have any shadows darkening your thoughts, you should give your own smiles to others. Because a smile, a genuine smile, can brighten up everyone’s day. Smile at strangers you never met before because you never know what they are going through and that one smile that you give them can mean the world to them.
